Royal Visitor For Welshpool Primary School

A visit from Prime Minister, John Howard, in March was always going to be difficult to beat for the students at Welshpool Primary School .

But, after weeks of planning, their new fitness track was officially opened by none other than the “Queen” last Friday afternoon.

As students bravely endured the chilly conditions, Her Royal Highness appeared, with her husband and one of her faithful corgies in tow.

The Queen, alias teacher Doug Humphrey, looked truly regal in her blue lace frock, fur-lined jacket, tiara and Blundstone boots as she proclaimed the new track open and blessed “all who may run on it.”  She then cut through the ribbon with a pair of scissors she just happened to have in her handbag.

HRH conferred a knighthood on principal, Peter Young, for his services to housework, after a week of wielding the feather duster and the tea-towel whilst his wife was on a school camp at Wilson ’s Promontory.

The Queen then fielded questions from students, who wanted to know why she seemed to have a beard, to which she replied she’d had “a very long day.” They were also curious about her tiara that kept slipping, but she assured the students it had nothing to do with her receding hairline.

Whilst she declined the invitation to run a lap of honour with the students, she did manage to jog 50 metres, but needed a royal sip of water before making the return trip to England . As the Queen and her entourage left the school, the students happily ran a few laps to practise for their cross-country event to be held on Monday.
