Fresh Water Fun In Science Week

Welshpool & District Primary School students joined thousands of others from all over Australia by celebrating National Science Week.

National Science Week this year had the theme of "Investigating Freshwater" and that's exactly what the kids did!

Split into multi - age groups they worked their way through five different investigations.

Pond creatures from the school's wetland were studied through a computer microscope with Tanya Butcher from Waterwatch helping identify such animals as Backswimmer Bugs and Watermites.

Students then discovered how these animals fitted into the foodchain.

At another activity students discovered how salinity and pollution affected freshwater and how difficult it was to remove substances once they were dissolved in water.

Other activities dealt with water properties, erosion and surface tension.
