1950’S Day at Welshpool and district primary school

On Monday the 21st of July, grade 4/5/6 dressed up and had a 1950’s theme. The girls had to dress in dresses, or tunics and wear plaits with ribbons in their hair. The boys were to dress in shirts with collars, long pants and ties. We all took turns to write with pen and nibs and we had bottles of ink to dip them in. Before we used the pens we had to blot the excess ink on to blotting paper. We sang “God Save The Queen” and learnt arithmetic, pounds, shillings, crowns, florins and how people wrote in the 1950’s. The girls and boys had to play separated from each other and the girls had to play pick up sticks, jacks, hopscotch and skippy.  Most of the boys played marbles. We found the work hard but eventually got through it. In those times if the boys were bad the teacher hit them with a cane and if the girls were bad they had to write a hundred lines. If the headmaster or any other teacher entered the classroom we would have to stand up. The teachers were very strict. We had to call the teachers Sir or Miss.
